Yann is highly regarded for her extensive experience in producing factual content about China for global media outlets. She serves as a bridge between Eastern life and Western production standards with a profound understanding of cross-cultural dynamics. Alongside her highly efficient and methodical approach to work, Yann is particularly praised for her expertise in high-stakes diplomacy and interpersonal management, which enables her to secure exclusive access to sensitive or vulnerable subjects whilst upholding the integrity of the project.
Yann developed her work philosophy through old Chinese idioms "Lifting the heavy as if it were light" and "Accumulate thickly to release thinly". It is her sincerity and professional poise that led her to enter China CDC and film the Director and scientists for 2 days at the peak of the pandemic when no other foreign media was allowed. She sets up meetings with high-profile officials amidst intensifying geopolitical climate, secures permissions into sensitive labs and factories, while maintaining enduring friendship with people from all walks of life and contributors she has filmed and worked with.
Beyond her professional practice, Yann is driven by a deep appreciation for humanity and nature. This integrity extends to her environmental ethos. During a series of consecutive shoots across multiple cities, she led a team of 13 for a fortnight without consuming one single-use plastic water bottle. To Yann, the final narrative is only as valid and authentic as the responsibility with which it is captured.
Yann speaks Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Teochew, English, Korean and a tiiiiiny bit of French.
Yann won a duPont-Columbia Award Silver Baton for her work on PBS NOVA's Decoding COVID-19.
